Building on Our Learning Pathways

Last year, we introduced our three Learning Pathways: Explore, Discovery and Investigate.

These pathways help us to ensure that teaching, environments, staffing and resources are carefully matched to pupils with broadly similar learning profiles. This allows us to provide the right balance of communication, personal development, life skills, physical development and academic learning for every child.

While pathways help shape provision, every pupil remains unique. Our staff continue to personalise learning through ongoing assessment, professional knowledge and each pupil's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Introducing Our Developmental Anchors

This year, we are introducing a new developmental curriculum called the Anchors.

The Anchors sit alongside our subject curriculum and help us create even stronger links between pupils' EHCP outcomes and their everyday learning experiences. They provide a clear, structured framework that supports the development of the essential skills pupils need to learn, communicate, build independence and prepare for the future.

We call them Anchors because these developmental skills provide a stable foundation for learning, helping to keep the wider curriculum connected to each pupil's individual needs and aspirations.

The Anchors focus on key areas of development, including:

• Communication and interaction
• Independence
• Physical and sensory development
• Cognition and learning
• Social and emotional development

Each area is carefully broken down into small, achievable steps, allowing pupils to build confidence and make meaningful progress over time.

Connecting Learning Through Personalised Goals

Every pupil will continue to work towards their Personalised Learning Goals (PLGs). These are manageable targets drawn from longer-term EHCP outcomes.

The relationship between these elements is straightforward:

• The Anchor identifies the developmental skill being targeted.
• The Learning Pathway guides how that skill is taught.
• The Wider Curriculum provides opportunities to practise and apply it throughout the school day.

Whether pupils are learning during lessons, play, interventions, community visits, residential experiences or daily routines, there will be meaningful opportunities to develop and strengthen important life skills.

Staff will be looking for progress that makes a real difference to pupils' lives, such as clearer communication, increased independence, reduced reliance on prompts, greater participation and the ability to use skills in new situations.

What this looks like Across our Pathways

Explore:  In the Explore pathway, Anchors are woven throughout the day with a focus on communication, engagement, sensory regulation, physical development, personal care and early independence. 

Discovery:  In Discovery, the Anchors support functional communication, social understanding, emotional regulation, independence and life skills. Where appropriate, pupils may also access Entry Level qualifications, Functional Skills or BTEC programmes.

Investigate:  For pupils in the Investigate pathway, Anchors complement academic learning by strengthening self-advocacy, emotional regulation, relationships, independence and preparation for adulthood. Pupils will continue to access appropriately challenging qualifications, including GCSEs where suitable.

What Families May Notice

As this approach becomes embedded, families may begin to see:

• Clearer links between EHCP outcomes, PLGs, Anchors and everyday learning
• Greater consistency in strategies used across lessons and routines
• More opportunities to practise important developmental skills
• Progress measured through meaningful changes, such as increased independence or fewer prompts
• More focused conversations about progress and next steps

While changes may sometimes seem small, these important building blocks help create lasting progress and greater independence over time.

Working Together

Families play a vital role in supporting their child's development. There is no need to recreate school lessons at home. Often, the most effective learning takes place through everyday routines, encouraging communication, offering choices, celebrating successes and helping children practise skills in real-life situations.

We are excited about the opportunities this new approach will bring and look forward to working closely with families throughout the year. Together, our Learning Pathways, Developmental Anchors and Personalised Learning Goals will help ensure every pupil receives a curriculum that is ambitious, meaningful and tailored to their individual journey.
