The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky - Margaret McMillan

As we continue to enjoy the beautiful autumn sunshine, the quote above by Margaret McMillan feels especially relevant. Some of the most valuable learning experiences happen beyond the classroom, where nature, fresh air and real-life adventures inspire curiosity, confidence and personal growth in ways that books alone can't do. This week, our students have certainly been making the most of these opportunities, exploring new experiences, developing important life skills and building confidence through learning outside the classroom.
A Warm Welcome
Firstly, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our new students, families and staff who have joined Orchard Manor School this term. It is lovely to have you with us!
It has been wonderful to see everyone settle into school life so quickly. Our new students have embraced new routines, friendships and learning opportunities with enthusiasm, while our new staff have already become valued members of our school community. We are delighted to have you with us and look forward to a successful year ahead together.
Outdoor Learning in Action
Our Outdoor Education classes have been busy taking
advantage of the fantastic weather, enjoying paddle boarding sessions in Dawlish and a range of other exciting outings. Activities like these help our young people develop resilience, teamwork, independence and confidence, while also enjoying the many benefits of being active outdoors.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful opportunities on our doorstep, and it has been fantastic to see pupils embracing new challenges and experiences with enthusiasm.
Positive Start to Our Electronic Device Rules
Thank you for your support with the school's updated expectations regarding electronic items. We are pleased to report that the new rules are settling in extremely well.
The changes have helped to reduce distractions, encourage greater social interaction during breaks and create a calmer environment for learning. Most importantly, pupils have adapted positively and responsibly, demonstrating maturity and understanding about why these expectations are in place.
We appreciate the ongoing support of parents and carers in reinforcing these expectations at home.
Curriculum Pathways
At the beginning of term we shared information about our Curriculum Pathways with families. These pathways help explain the learning journey available to students and how we tailor education to meet individual needs, strengths and aspirations.
We understand that parents and carers may have questions regarding the new pathways and what the different options involve. If you would like further information, please click here:

We will also be holding Curriculum Pathway drop-in sessions during our Parent Evening in March at both the Upper and Lower School sites. These sessions will give parents and carers the opportunity to speak face-to-face with a member of staff about the pathways available to their child, ask any questions they may have, and gain a clearer understanding of how each pathway supports their child’s progress and future opportunities.
A Wonderful Macmillan Coffee Morning
Yesterday, staff came together for a fantastic Macmillan Coffee Morning organised by Steve Dinnie and members of the OMS Men's Mental Health Coffee Club.
There was an impressive selection of cakes, cookies and other delicious treats, all accompanied by barista-style coffee. As always, the school community showed incredible generosity and we were delighted to raise valuable funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
A huge thank you to everyone who baked, donated, helped organise the event or simply came along to enjoy a coffee and a slice of cake.
If you would still like to contribute, donations can be made here:

Looking Ahead
As we move further into the autumn term, it is wonderful to see pupils settling into routines, engaging positively in lessons and making the most of the many opportunities available to them both in and out of school.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Working together, we can ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to thrive, grow and succeed.
With best wishes for a restful weekend.
