Orchard Manor School Wins National “Building Belonging” Award

Orchard Manor School is celebrating national recognition after receiving the Building Belonging Award at the Youth Sports Partnership National Conference. The award honours schools that create inclusive environments where every young person feels valued and connected.
Representing the school, Catherine Kilburn, Head of PE and Nicola Jones, Headteacher, proudly accepted the award on behalf of the Orchard Manor community. The recognition highlights the powerful role that PE, sport and play have in engaging pupils and supporting those who may face significant challenges outside mainstream education.
The conference began with a memorable moment as the OMS Dance Troupe performed an expressive piece set to the poem “I Am the Child.” Their confident and moving performance captured the spirit of inclusion and belonging that the award celebrates, earning the pupils a well-deserved standing ovation.
A special tribute was paid to the school’s PE Team, whose dedication and creativity have helped transform the culture of physical activity at Orchard Manor. Through inclusive programmes – from sensory and fundamental movement work to exam-level PE- they provide opportunities for pupils to build confidence, regulate emotions and develop resilience. Their wide-ranging activities, including a week-long Sports Day and enrichment opportunities such as Apparatus, Active Girls and Unihoc, ensure every pupil can take part and succeed.
The school also recognised the contributions of the Outdoor Education Team, including Woodland Learning and Horticulture, alongside the Expressive Arts Team, whose work encourages creativity, challenge and self-expression.
For Orchard Manor, the award reflects the school’s core values. Many pupils arrive feeling anxious or disconnected from education, but through strong relationships and a supportive environment, they rediscover confidence and a genuine sense of belonging.
Winning the Building Belonging Award celebrates the collective efforts of staff and pupils across the school — and the commitment to inclusion, courage and opportunity that defines the Orchard Manor community.
